Philadelphia—August 29, 2007 — In its 2008 rankings, for the second year in a row, U.S. News & World Reportranked both the undergraduate International Business program and the undergraduate Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) program of Temple University’s Fox School of Business among the Top 10 programs in the U.S. Both programs were ranked as 7th best.

The Fox School undergraduate program was also ranked in the top 75 among all business schools in the nation. In the Philadelphia region, Temple University’s Fox School ranks second to University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in overall business school rankings.

“These rankings are a testimony to the Fox School’s reputation, the impressive statistics of its incoming freshman class, the growth of our honors program and our excellent placement services,” said M. Moshe Porat, Fox School dean.

The Risk Management and Insurance program has achieved top-10 rankings four times in the past five years, and this is the second year in a row that U.S.News & World Report ranked Fox’s International Business program in the top 10.

International Business

Fox’s International Business undergraduate program focuses on what it takes for its graduates to succeed in the global marketplace. One of the program’s strengths is that students must demonstrate foreign language proficiency at a fourth semester level.

“Our globally competent students are aware of the dynamics of a globalized economy and its impact on business functions in domestic and international companies. Students also learn about the interactions between international relations and international business, and the role played by international companies in global trade and commerce,” said Arvind Phatak, Laura H. Carnell Professor of Management and International Business, executive director of Temple’s Institute for Global Management Studies (IGMS) and the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER).

Fox’s undergraduate international business program is supported by its high-profile CIBER — one of only 31 such centers in the U.S., the high quality of its faculty, and the prestigious journal it produces, the Journal of International Management, edited by renowned General and Strategic Management Professor Masaaki “Mike” Kotabe.

Other program highlights include an international business capstone course that enables students to apply IB tools and methods to solve real business cases. All students develop a foreign market entry strategy for a small- to medium-size enterprise in the region. Another notable feature of the Fox IB program is the School’s ongoing relationship with Dubai Women’s College (DWC) in which Fox students work in teams with students from DWC on international business projects.

The IB program also offers two interdisciplinary certificates of specialization in Asian Business and Society, and in Latin American Studies and Spanish for Business. Students complete coursework in area studies, a foreign language, and specialty IB coursework to further strengthen their knowledge of the increasingly globalized world.

To increase students’ international exposure, IB majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad. In addition to its campuses in Rome and Tokyo, Temple CIBER administers business programs in India, China, France, Ireland, and Mexico, providing customized advising and financial assistance.

Risk Management and Insurance

Fox’s Risk Management and Insurance program is the second-largest such program worldwide, as recognized by Business Insurance magazine. The program is known for the diverse expertise, research interests and productivity of its faculty; for its prestigious journals; for its actuarial science program, certified by the Society of Actuaries; and for the review seminars that Fox’s Actuarial Institute provides.

The RMI program has an unusually high placement rate, placing most of its students in internships and more than 95 percent in full-time positions upon graduation. In summer 2007, 122 Fox students in risk management and actuarial science completed internships throughout the United States.

The international parent organization of Fox’s risk management and insurance student professional organization, Gamma Iota Sigma, has recognized the Fox chapter as the best in the nation 12 times in the past 14 years. Since 1980, on a yearly basis, the department continues to have the largest number of scholarship winners in the United States for the Spencer Educational Foundation scholarship, given by the Risk and Insurance Management Society.

“I’m happy to see our program, the only program to have concentrations in employee benefits management and healthcare risk management in addition to traditional risk management and insurance, and actuarial science, receive this well-deserved ranking,” said department chair Rob Drennan.

In spring 2007, Dr. J. David Cummins, recently recognized as the #1 researcher in the world in the field of Risk and Insurance in an article in the Journal of Risk and Insurance, joined the department as a professor. His research focuses on insurance economics; financial risk management; productivity and efficiency; and securitization.

The Fox School’s Risk Management and Insurance department also publishes three leading risk management journals: Risk Management and Insurance Review, edited by Professor Mary Weiss; the Journal of Risk Finance, edited by Professor Michael Powers and Benefits Quarterly, edited by Associate Professor Jack VanDerhei.

Temple University’s Fox School of Business is the largest, most comprehensive business school in the greater Philadelphia region and among the largest in the world, with more than 6,000 students, 150 full-time faculty members and 51,000 alumni.

For the third consecutive year, the Financial Times ranked the Fox School’s MBA among the Top 10 programs in the U.S. for “Value for Money” and as one of the Top 10 programs among public urban universities in the U.S. This year, Financial Times also cited the Fox MBA as 47th in the U.S. for its three-year average ranking. Entrepreneurmagazine and Princeton Review jointly ranked the Fox School’s undergraduate Entrepreneurship program in the Top 5 in the U.S. and its graduate Entrepreneurship program in the Top 10. The Fox School of Business is accredited by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business).
